Descriptor: Damage
Description: Exposure to contact herbicides such as paraquat and dinoseb causes white lesions on leaves and stems. Other herbicides such as triazines, hexaxinone, acifluorfen, and bentazon may damage tobacco by root absorption, as well as by contact injury. The lesions turn brown and may fall out leaving holes in the leaf. Low levels of paraquat produce distinct individual lesions. With high levels, the lesions combine causing the leaves to yellow, and areas between the veins to die and fall out. If the plant does not die, later growth will be normal. Weather fleck and some types of chemicals may produce similar symptoms.
