General Description

• Annual grass found in wet areas
• Grows to 1.5’ tall

Leaves

• Leaves are 1 - 3” long, 1/5” (0.5 cm) wide; have heart-shaped bases.
• The margins of the leaves have conspicuous hairs

Flowers

• Flowers bloom in early fall and are contained in 1 to several, 1 - 3” long spikes
• Fairly tight spiked arrangement of flowers

Fruit

• The seeds are slender and yellowish in color, measuring 0.2” long

Habitat

• Sunny and moist
• Edge, Floodplain Forest, Lake or Pond, Open Disturbed Area, Pasture, River or Stream, Wet Meadow

Look-alikes

deertongue grass (Dicanthelium clandestinum)

• Arrangement of flowers is pyramid shaped
• Slightly larger, covered with stiff hairs, and its leaves are generally longer and pointy in shape.
• Usually be found in drier sites

• Leaves do not have a heart-shaped base.
